How code reuse drives business change at the DWP

The Department for Work and Pensions has created an internal portal based on MuleSoft’s Anypoint platform to manage and promote reuse of a growing number of common application programming interfaces (APIs) that can be shared across different areas of the organisation.

Before beginning a journey on the approach it takes to reuse the software it develops, the DWP had hundreds of point-to-point integrations between multiple systems. These were accessed programmatically using APIs, but as Jacqui Leggetter, head of integration at the department, explains, often the API represented a single connection into a large system and had complex data requirements.
