Today is World Backup Day, our annual reminder of the importance of being diligent about backing up data to prevent data loss. But the fact is, the rate at which data levels are exploding in size is far outpacing what legacy data backup systems can achieve. The way we have done backup for the past 20 years is broken, especially at scale. As the amount of data continues to increase – both in the number of files and the amount of data generated – backup systems that scan file systems are no longer feasible, particularly as we enter the realms of billions of files and petabytes or more of data.
